One controversial ruling she made was regarding a lawsuit brought by white firefighters in New Haven, Connecticut. All the New Haven firefighters took a test that was going to weigh heavily for promotions. The problem was that all the top scores on the test were from white firefighters and the black firefighters didn’t do too well. After they saw the results, the New Haven fire dept. decided not to use the test scores in decided promotions. The white firefighters sued the city of New Haven, claiming racial discrimination. The city of New Haven said they could have been sued by the black firefighters claiming that the test was racially biased, similar to how some blacks claim the SAT test is biased against black people, which is why they do so poorly on it compared to other races. Judge Sotomayor sided with the city of New Haven, against the white firefighters.
Do you think Sotomayor was right in this case? Should we use tests as a form of promotion, even if the people that score the highest are all white? Is that fair to minorities?

I need a bunch of stuff done for my public safety class: Budget, Manpower Flow Chart, One Month schedule requiring 24/7 coverage, Map showing facilities location, and a Mission Statement. (This project is called create a dept and we have to make it realistic) The city is of a population of 100,000 people. The budget must reflect true life numbers and the manpower must be realistic for a department serving a city of 100,000. A county w/ multiple fire districts or dept will not work, it must be one.
Look at a Department for 100,000 citizens or a metropolis.
Tomorrow is my 5 yr anniversary and i am heartbroke. My husband acts like he hates me and the kids. About a year ago he got his Va disability and has not worked since. I work full time as a paramedic he also has a paramedic license and used to work as a paramedic and he still can. He started volunteering for the fire department a year ago and now thats all he lives for. I want to move into a house since we live in a apartment and we have talked about buying a house and now he dont want to do that all he talks about is staying in the city so he can respond to calls. Our kids cant play outside we live in apartments. He has offered me 1500 a month in child support if i will take our son and forget the divorce so he can be free. Well i believe he wants to be free from everything no kids no wife nothing but volunteering. Sad thing is the guys at the fire dept think he is a idiot. I have been trying to keep the marriage together for our 4 yr old son but i give up i wont stay no love here.

My house burnt Easter sunday 2005. Fire dept found no cause, Co-Operators brought in there own fire investigators. We have gotten nothing, no one will return our calls at there lawyers office. The City sends us bills for the property maintenace the fire dept now wants the building ripped down at our cost???? The co-operators took charge of the property in 2006, WHy are they all coming after us??? I NEED HELP TO FIGHT THEM…please anyone….
The CO-Operators is a HUGE INsurance company. We are the home owners and were fully insured to clear this up…..Our agent will not speak with us only there lawyer….SO now what???

I have an alleyway that is blocked up with branches of trees, burnt fire debris, and cinder blocks from my backyard door all the way to the end of the alley. Who would you suggest I call or write a letter to about cleaning this up as it is unsafe and if I or anyone needed to go out into the alley to escape a fire, I would not be able to. Isn’t every city supposed to have someone who takes care of these matters? I called the streets dept. as I live in Philadelphia and that’s who I was told handles it, but they basically told me I had to clean that mess up myself which is impossible and unreasonable of them to think so. The city is responsible for vacant houses to be boarded up, so if the houses are falling apart and it’s causing a hazard who cleans it up? Any help or suggestions greatly appreaciated.
I looked it up for your apparently you can report the building as abandoned to the police and there is a specific section for fire damaged… so I would imagine that you can get advise from there as to what the next step is… I cant imagine you are held liable for someone else’s home falling onto your property I would imagine you have a legal right to sue the owner to fix your property as it was not your fault…. My landlord & I been going back & forth for a couple of months now. It just turned a year on my lease, I did not renew it so she gave me a 2 sentence letter saying basically that she want possession of the premises within 60 days. Rent is being paid by Housing Authority every month, & she just don’t make repairs. It’s been a year that I’ve been bugging her about the mice & roach infestation that’s going on in the building. I have written letters from her & I discussing the situation & me basically saying that I’ve been patient for a year and she needs to hurry up & fix the situation. There’s been about 4 times in a year that she brought an inspector & the issue still remains. I cant afford to move right now because I don’t have the $$$ for security deposit and that’s what she keeps telling me to do. My belongings are messed up, such as I had to throw away a homemade pie (pasteles)machine that costs me $150- which I have the receipt. I have most letters we wrote back & forth, I have pictures of mice’s, roaches, repairs & damaged clothing. I bought my kids summer clothes & they are all ruin with holes. This is stressing me out so much…. She is also charging me for hallway lights, I had the inspector come to confirm it-when she’s suppose to pay for it. She thinks I’m stupid and that she could do whatever she wants to me. My sofa’s need to be thrown out because it has mice’s. What should I bring to court that can help me get some type of reimbursement for my damaged properties & extra money I paid on my electric bill for hallway light for a whole year. My landlord is really a slumlord. I have a son with asthma and my kids have been sick through the whole year. I contacted legal aid and gave me info on who else I should contact, but they cant help me no more, I’ve done everything possible to help myself with the situation (I think). I also contacted the city for an inspection & health dept. I also have problems with my power- it keeps shutting off, I had to call the fire dept to get my power back on because she refused to come and put it on herself. I have reports from the inspections & police dept. What can I bring so the judge can be on my side & hear me out? Help…Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have 5 employees at my pc shop I hired early this past fall who are paroled prison inmates from a medium security prison and trying to get their lives on track (their crimes range from dui to armed robbery of liquor/convienience stores)
Recently I have become the target of protest by christian orginizations because I hired these individuals meanwhile since their release from prison none of them have done even the smallest thing to arouse police suspicion and invoke arrest by the local police dept
I’m catchin all kindsa hell from christian groups who constantly protest outside my shop and I run a small pc repair shop in ohio
I don’t want to fire these individuals that are working for me because they are some of the best employees I have ever had and are really doing well on this 2nd chance but the christian groups are making it hard for customers to come to my shop
What would you do in this situation I need to know and the city council and local police dept are no help???
Contact the nearest large newspaper and TV stations. They love stuff like this – "Local businessman harassed by religious group (Name) because he gives criminals a second chance."
Write a letter to the Editor of the local newspaper.
Also call-in to local talk shows and publicize your plight.
This will highlight the fact that they have another agenda rather than "Christian charity", and good will toward men.
While they have the right to protest, they do not have the right to disrupt your business, see if you can get police protection to provide customers with "secure access" to your business.
If they refuse, or half-heartedly patrol, contact the State Attorney General’s Office and file a complaint, and ask for State Police to protect your business. In addition, write a letter to the US Attorney General requesting that he look into the situation, since you may feel that your civil rights may be violated.
Some other options: Have a group of friends, and friends of employees counter-picket with signs that read: "Can you tell who is the criminal?"
Picket their churches/ houses of worship with signs that say: "Pray for Forgiveness" – Don’t forget to inform the TV stations that you will be picketing the "houses of worship"
Your employees have paid their debt to society and deserve a chance to straighten out their lives. You are among the very few that have provided such an opportunity. You shouldn’t be persecuted.
